A Message from Lisa Habighorst, Co-Founder & Executive Director…

Dear community partners, donors, and volunteers –

Some of the greatest literary masterpieces boast some of the most unexpected plot twists. The protagonist never senses what’s happening until they are brought face-to-face with untimely and often unsettling circumstances. We write to you today feeling a little bit like that protagonist, standing toe-to-toe with a formidable opponent. The impact of COVID-19 (coronavirus) has left our community confused and a little anxious. But as with all good stories, the more difficult the obstacle the more triumphant the ending. We will get through this obstacle. It is a twist in our story that we certainly didn’t expect, but Spread the Word Nevada has never been afraid of a challenge.

With that said, all great warriors abide by the law (and the health code), and we would like to update you – our STWN family – on the steps that we are taking to address this challenge. We continue to monitor the situation closely and want to make clear that the safety and health of our STWN family is paramount to us. As such, STWN has implemented the following changes to our operations:

As of Friday, 3/13/2020 all school-based STWN programs (Breakfast/Snack Time with Books, and Books and Buddies) have been temporarily suspended until further notice per the guidelines and restrictions set forth by the Clark County School District and Nevada Governor’s office.

As of Monday, 3/16/2020 all volunteer activities and fingerprinting services were suspended until further notice per the guidelines set forth by the CDC, WHO, and SNHD. The suspended volunteer activities include:

  • All book cleanings
  • Private volunteer events
  • Books & Buddies mentoring
  • Breakfast/Snack Time with Books volunteering
  • Amazon scanning and listing

As of Wednesday, 3/18/2020 the Spread the Word Nevada staff will be operating on a “work-from-home” basis per the direction of the Nevada Governor’s office. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us via email if you have questions or concerns. We are here for you!

While this has, and continues to be, a new challenge each day, please rest assured that we will resume our normal programming as soon as it is safe for our team and those we serve. We hope this letter serves as a beacon of hope in a dark time. With our friends, family, and community partners by our side, we will be victorious in our drive to take down this unwelcomed foe. And until we are allowed to wrap our arms around each and every one of you, we would like to offer you a few pieces of advice taken right from some of our favorite literary classics. Feel free to share these with your friends and family and encourage them to find peace and hope within the pages of a good book during this break.

With heartfelt wishes for good health and happy days ahead,
Lisa Habighorst

Zappos for Good Supports Spread the Word Nevada with $25,000 Sponsorship
Funds to benefit the organization’s children’s literacy programs

Las Vegas – Henderson, NV (May 16, 2019) – Spread the Word Nevada (STWN) has been selected by Zappos for Good as the recipient of a $25,000 sponsorship for Howard Hollingsworth STEAM Academy for the 2019/20 school year. STWN and Zappos for Good welcomes Hollingsworth ES as the 60th adopted school in Southern Nevada.

This sponsorship allows the nonprofit to support Hollingsworth ES with the following children’s literacy programs:

  • Kids to Kids provides books for each child’s home during the school year to build a home library. Five new and gently used books are selected at this kick-off celebration, and then, once a month, one additional book is selected to take home.
  • Breakfast with Books increases the awareness and importance of reading as a family activity. Each program consists of a light snack, story time, raffle, and most importantly the opportunity for the whole family to choose a book to take home.

All of our programs promote book ownership and fosters a love of reading in the home. Literacy needs to be nurtured because it is the foundation for a child’s success in school and in life.

“Welcoming our 60th school in Southern Nevada is another step closer to reaching every at-risk student in our state,” says Lisa Habighorst, Executive Director of STWN. “We’re so grateful Zappos for Good took that step with us to support the children and their families at Hollingsworth.”

“We have a love for pursuing growth and learning here at Zappos and this program is going to help kids from our own community share in that passion through the joy of reading!” said Steven Bautista, Head of Charity at Zappos.com.

Vegas Golden Knights Foundation Grants $50,000 to Spread the Word Nevada
At-Risk Students Receive the Gift of Reading

Las Vegas – Henderson, NV (December 5, 2018) – Vegas Golden Knights Foundation and Spread the Word Nevada (STWN) celebrate the adoption of Red Rock Elementary School, where each student receives books to build their home library. The $50,000 Leaders for Literacy Sponsorship includes Full Immersion Literacy Services:

  • Kids to Kids, Spread the Word Nevada’s flagship program, puts books into the hands of at-risk children to build home libraries. Each student at Red Rock ES receives a book once a month to expand their selection of books at home to read.
  • Books & Buddies aims to improve the reading and comprehension skills by partnering at-risk children with volunteer mentors acting as reading companions. Mentors provide their “buddy” the much needed individualized attention to enhance classroom literacy efforts which are, unfortunately, often absent from the child’s home environment.
  • Breakfast with Books is a family literacy program that encourages reading as a household activity. Each program consists of a light snack, story time, raffle, and most importantly the opportunity for both children and parents to select a new book.

“We are grateful the Vegas Golden Knights Foundation is as passionate as we are about fostering literacy in Nevada,” says Lisa Habighorst, STWN Executive Director. “The Golden Knights and STWN only do things in a BIG way, so partnering to change the lives of 800 children with our programs makes perfect sense!”

“The Vegas Golden Knights Foundation is excited to work with STWN in support of building literacy among Nevada families, says Vegas Golden Knights president, John Coogan. “We’ve been extremely impressed with the great impact that STWN is delivering throughout Southern Nevada and are honored to help carry that impact to the students and families of Red Rock Elementary School.”
