Donny Osmond Joins in Launch of Kids to Kids Program at Dean Petersen Development School

On May 21, 2009, Spread the Word Nevada adopted its 18th school, Dean Petersen Professional Development.

Iconic performer Donny Osmond took part in the celebration (below, with his son, Joshua).

The adoption of the school was made possible by a grant from the NV Energy Foundation.

More than 700 students attended two kick-off assemblies that featured storytelling by Spread the Word Nevada Founder Laurie Hartig (above, right), as well as words of inspiration from Lisa Habighorst, Executive Director of Spread the Word Nevada, and skits illustrating the power of community. Entertainer Donny Osmond, and his son Joshua, participated in the skits.

Donny Osmond remarked, "I never had the opportunity to go to a traditional public school since most of my education was done through the mail. Books were very important to me. This event gave me an opportunity to share the importance of books with my son, Joshua, who is currently a fifth grader, and to have him help support Spread the Word Nevada's literacy programs."

After each assembly, the children received a canvas bag and five books to build home libraries.

Other community partners who attended the adoption ceremony included Robert F. Alfaro, Region Superintendent, Clark County School District; Greg and Shawna DeSart, Geotechnical & Environmental Services, Inc. (GES); Doretha Graham-Easler, NV Energy; Mario Joyner, Nevada State Bank and Dr. Eva White, Assistant Region Superintendent, Clark County School District.

Help Spread the Word Nevada continue its mission to bring the joy of reading to at-risk children in the Las Vegas Valley. Become a community partner, donor or volunteer.

The children at Dean Petersen will continue to benefit from Spread the Word Nevada programs with monthly book distributions.

Thanks to everyone who made the program launch at Dean Petersen Professional Development school such a resounding success!
