Nonprofit Organization Spread the Word Nevada Honored as Charity
of the Year by Nevada Community Foundation
October
12, 2005 - The
Nevada Community Foundation recognized Spread
the Word Nevada as "Outstanding Charity of the Year"
for the organization's work to encourage and promote a love
for reading among Nevada's elementary school children through
its Kids to Kids program.
Kids
to Kids helps students in 11 Clark County schools
build a home library by giving students new and gently-used
books. Students in the program, which targets at-risk schools,
often read their books to siblings and parents, in some families
helping to teach English to other household members.
The
Nevada Community Foundation honored Spread the Word Nevada
at its "Celebration of Giving" event at the Frank
Rogers Building on October 20, 2005.
President
Laurie Porter and Executive Director Lisa Habighorst accepted
the award, and were joined by Board members Irene Lee and
Susan Miller. Stated Porter, "It is an incredible honor
to be recognized by the Nevada Community Foundation for our
work. To be recognized by an organization of philanthropists
is an incredible affirmation that Kids
to Kids is making a difference in the lives of
Nevadans."
Kids
to Kids member sponsors include Goodwill Industries,
MGM Voice Foundation, Focus Property Group, the Venetian Hotel
Resort and many others.
Spread
the Word Nevada's Kids to Kids
program has distributed more than 500,000 books to Nevada
schoolchildren.
