Henderson
Senior Center Cleans 100,000th Book for Charity Kids to Kids
Literacy
Project Honors Seniors for Their Dedicated Efforts in Distributing
Books to At-Risk Children
Dec.
20, 2005 - Helping childrenthat is what senior volunteers
are doing at the Henderson Senior Center every Tuesday morning
from 9:00-11:00 a.m.
In
partnership with the Kids to Kids
literacy project, sponsored by Spread
the Word Nevada, senior citizens help Kids
to Kids prepare the gently used children’s books for distribution
to at-risk youngsters throughout Southern Nevada.
Since
the initial gathering on January 21, 2003, a group of 11-13
seniors meet with Kids to Kids
employee Angie Homa, who comes prepared with an average of
1,500 books that need cleaning and repairing.
Angie
notes, "This time is not only about working with the
books, it is also about friendships, for as they are working
these senior friends share stories of their lives, their children,
their joys, and their sorrows. Seeing a favorite book of a
child or grandchild often triggers another fond memory. It
is time together that we all treasure."

Senior
groups also meet at the Boulder City, Derfelt, and Lieburn
Senior Centers.
Founder
and President, Laurie Porter comments, "Kids
to Kids is magic! It is a program that touches
the lives of not only the children served, but also those
who work and volunteer with us. We are heart-warmed by the
commitment of our senior volunteers at the Henderson Senior
Center. Without their dedicated efforts, Kids
to Kids simply couldn't meet the number of books
we have promised to the youngsters at our schools. Everyone
should come in some time, grab a cup of coffee and a cleaning
rag and share in the laughter, conversation, and friendship
that is exchanged at these cleaning groups. We are so pleased
to be able to celebrate the cleaning of their 100,000th book.
It will be a celebration of such love and appreciation!"
Kids
to Kids provides nearly 11,000 children's books
each month to at-risk youth across the valley. Youngsters
select these new and gently used books to take home, read
over and over, share with family members, and treasure forever.
They are important pieces in the students' over-all academic
success.
