Kids
to Kids Distributes One Millionth Book:
Comedian-Magician Mac King Joins in the Celebration
September
15, 2008 - Spread the Word Nevada:
Kids to Kids celebrated the distribution of its
one-millionth book at an event on September 15 at Sunrise
Acres Elementary School.
Comedian
Magician Mac King, star of "The Mac King Comedy Magic
Show" at Harrah's Las Vegas and a children's literacy
advocate, made a special appearance at the celebration.

Sunrise
Acres was the first school "adopted" by Kids to
Kids in 2001.
Kids
to Kids Executive Director Lisa Habighorst and
King distributed the organization's one-millionth book to
a lucky child, Utahlieya White (below).
King
has been an ardent supporter of Kids
to Kids since 2006.
Lisa
Habighorst stated, "Reaching the one-millionth book distribution
mark is a momentous milestone for us and we wouldn't have
been able to accomplish this with out the support of the community
and organizations that believe in the importance of children's
literacy."
Quick
Facts about the Million Books Distributed by Kids to Kids
The average size of donated books is nine inches long. If
you laid all of the donated books end to end, the books
would reach from Las Vegas, Nevada all the way to Area 51
in Arizona, 135 miles away. (That is 750,000 feet, or 142
miles, of books. A mile is 5,280 feet.)
If the average donated book has 91 pages, and a tree can
produce about 50,000 pages, the Kids
to Kids program of giving gently-used books to
children has saved more than 1,800 trees!
If you stacked all the donated books (an average of half-an-inch
thick) into a giant pile, the pile would be taller than
40 Stratosphere towers stacked on top of one other. (That
is 41,666 feet of books. The Stratosphere is 1,049 feet
tall.)
Kids to Kids has distributed
more books than there are citizens of Fiji.
As stated, the donated books have an average of 91 pages
each. If you sat down and read one page a minute, it would
take you 173 years to read all of the distributed books.
(Keep in mind, Kids to Kids
is distributing more books every day.)
If you add up the weight of all the books Kids
to Kids has donated, that weight would exceed
500,000 pounds, or 250 tons. The books would weigh more
than two adult blue whales (they average 238,000 pounds)
and more than a 747 jumbo jet (just 395,000 pounds). Our
average book weighs eight ounces.
