Hi, my name is Sarina, and I’m 14 years old, currently a freshman in high school. For my Bat Mitzvah project, I’m organizing two activities. First, I’m hosting baking sessions where everyone is welcome to come and bake together. The proceeds from these sessions will go to Spread the Word Nevada.
STWN is a local non-profit, dedicated to providing books and literacy assistance to underserved communities. Second, I’m running a virtual book drive. STWN is able to buy brand-new children’s books for only $2; every little bit helps! I chose to partner with Spread the Word Nevada because they offer a mentoring program that helps children struggling with reading.
This cause is very personal to me because I had my own challenges with reading starting in 2nd grade. My school told my parents I was falling behind, so they enrolled me in the Kumon reading program at Silverado Ranch. I graduated the program at the end of October. This program has made a huge difference in my academic performance and confidence. I can relate to the children Spread the Word Nevada helps and I want to support them in overcoming their reading struggles. This connection to my own experiences is why this project means so much to me.
