Books & Buddies
Books & Buddies pairs students with volunteer mentors who serve as reading buddies. Working together, the mentor and student focus on improving the child’s reading proficiency, comprehension, and fluency skills. We have mentor centers within select CCSD elementary schools, where volunteer mentors meet with the same students each week on a set day and time. This consistency allows students and mentors to build meaningful relationships.
Mentor Requirements
- Be at least 16 years of age
- A completed online application
- Attend a mentor orientation session (1.5 hours)
- Pass a criminal background check (Spread the Word Nevada covers the cost)
- Apply through CCSD for approval to serve as a volunteer within the school
- Volunteer for 1 hour per week on a designated day/time
- Transportation to and from the assigned school location

Three Essential Qualities of a Mentor
Available Time
Be Realistic – Do you have the time to build this relationship?
Dependability
Physically and Emotionally – Can you regularly show up and maintain interest over a period of time?
Developmental Attitude
Is your goal to help a “buddy” grow in both skills and confidence and not to “fix” the child’s problems?
If you answered YES to the three questions above, we very much want YOU as a Books & Buddies mentor! Please click below!
